News update from the Penwith Local History Group, June 2022

News update from the Penwith Local History Group,
June 2022

The group continues to meet, research and write. The Morrab Library Summer Fair on June 18th gave us a chance to show off and sell our wares.

These of course include not only our own publications, which you can see above on the front row, but also other publications by members – two of which are shown here, with crack sales team Jenny and Linda in full promotional flow.

Although the group as a whole is not making a presentation at this year’s Penzance Literary Festival, two members – Jenny Dearlove and Linda Collins – will be putting on their own show: ‘Girls Back on Track’. This is an illustrated talk based on Jenny’s research for her recent book Women to the Rescue, and will be accompanied by live folk song from Linda. The event is on Wednesday 6th July, 1.00 at St John’s Hall, and you can buy a ticket here or on the door.

Camidge & Stringer (one of whom is a PLHG member) will be touring again in July, this time with a revival of Pool under the Prom, their show set in the old sea-water baths at the end of the Penzance Promenade. Two women reminisce, ruminate and argue their way through a range of local stories from the years 1890 to 1947.  The show is coming to St Just, Lamorna Community Hall, Bude and Praa Sands during July – full details on their website.

To our local readers, we hope that you enjoy Golowan, and after (or perhaps instead of) the excitement of Mazey Eve and the crowds of Mazey Day, you might like to sit down and quietly enjoy our latest Penwith Paper. Linda Camidge provides three glimpses of what the 19th-century festival may have been like in 1801, 1824 (an account perhaps based on memories from the late 18th century), and in its declining years between 1878 and 1883.

Enjoy the sunshine – more news in a few weeks’ time!
