Another year, another lockdown… and more virtual meetings for the Penwith Local History Group.
But we have some positive news to begin the year – we are honoured to have among our members prolific author and editor Pam Lomax, and to an already impressive tally of art and local history, Pam has now added one more: ‘Walk Newlyn,’ produced for the Newlyn Archive.
The book offers three separate walks round the separate historic districts of Newlyn, which were not linked until the road around the harbour was constructed at the end of the 19th century. The book encourages readers to explore the ‘Street-an-Nowan,’ Tolcarne and ‘Newlyn Town’ areas as they would have been experienced before WW1. As well as useful maps, the book includes over 30 illustrations – both photographs of old Newlyn, and reproductions of paintings held by Penlee House Gallery and Museum.
Publication of the book has been sponsored by the Newlyn Co-op, Trelawney’s Fish Shop and Stevenson’s Fish Shop. Priced at only £5, if you live locally it’s just the thing for those lockdown walks – and if not, an ideal companion for your next visit to West Cornwall.
Pam’s other books for the Newlyn Archive within the past few years include ‘Newlyn at War’ (second edition 2018), Newlyn at Play 1850-1950’ and ‘The Story of Newlyn Harbour.’ Pam has also published on a range of artists associated with Newlyn, including Thomas Gotch, whose most famous works include ‘Alleluia’ and ‘The Child Enthroned.’
