PLHG News January 2022

News update from the Penwith Local History Group,
January 2022

Although 2021 could have been an empty year, the group is an inventive and resilient one, and we found plenty of ways to stay active. Three of us had books published; others arranged exhibitions, devised and acted in historical entertainments, and answered queries sent to our website – as well as continuing our own research. Fiendish homework was devised to keep us thinking in   historical terms – and enthusiastically completed by several members (although the set task was frequently subverted…)

We stayed together through falls, broken bones, serious illness (other than Covid) - and finally all but two of us were able to meet for a wonderful Christmas lunch at The Pirate, Alverton, once a farmhouse dating from the late1690s and now an inn. Thanks to all the staff who hosted and cooked for us magnificently.

Recently, Camidge & Stringer (half of which is a PLHG member) have performed their show on Cornishman editor Herbert Thomas at a range of local venues. The show commemorates the 70th anniversary of his death in December. Camidge & Stringer also return to the Acorn Theatre on February 17th with their show about underwater bathing in Penzance: ‘Pool Under the Prom’

Jean Nankervis launched her book ‘A History of Zennor Parish’ on December 9th – as reported in the St Ives Times and Echo. A reminder that the book is available from the author  jean.nankervis@btinternet.com
