PLHG News November 2021

News update from the Penwith Local History Group,
November 2021

With winter on the way, you may be looking for the ideal gift… and two of our members have recently published new books.  Jean Nankervis – also the author of our current Penwith Paper – has published volume 1 of A History of Zennor – A parish in West Cornwall. The book traces the story of the parish from its Iron Age origins, through the Celtic and early Christian periods and the building of the church, followed by the Black Death…  and into the (temporarily) safer waters of the 16th century. The 64-page book has 60 illustrations and is available from the author for £12 plus £2 post and packing

The Hypatia Trust has published long-term member Jenny Dearlove’s Women to the Rescue  -  A Penzance Refuge for Girls in Trouble, as part of their Women of Cornwall Monograph series. The book follows this compassionate charitable refuge throughout the 20th century; it illustrates the changes in attitude towards girls in trouble as a second chance was given to ‘fallen’ women and ‘wayward’ girls to turn their lives around. Along with thumb-nail sketches of the girls who received help are the perennial issues of poverty, exploitation, adoption and affordable housing. This uplifting story contains touches of humour and can be bought from the Hypatia Trust Website for £10.50 to include post and packing.

Member Linda Camidge is half of performance duo Camidge and Stringer, and their show Wish We Weren’t Here – Disappointed Literary Visitors 1820-1917 looks into the stories of some writers who have left less than ecstatic impressions of West Cornwall. The light-hearted multi-media show is on at the Acorn Penzance on Thursday 25th November

We have also uploaded onto the website part two of Jean Nakervis’ Penwith Paper Some Zennor Women, in which Jean takes the story through the Tudor period to the English Civil War. If you want to know more about Zennor, why not buy Jean’s book, or her earlier book about Wicca farm?

Happy reading, one and all! Thanks to the many people who send in their enquiries – we don’t cover family history or events after 1971, but otherwise we are always happy to do our best to help.
