On 5 April 1826, the townsfolk of Redruth were astonished when Richard Warren, brother of the celebrated wrestler, James Warren, who suffered so severely due to the assistance he gave to saving many when the East Indiaman Kent sank, appeared in the town in the dress usually worn by Mexican miners. The previous day Richard and another miner both just returned from Mexico, due to ill health, had enlivened Redruth by entering the town in a post chaise heartily welcomed by acquaintances who they entertained by recounting their adventures there.
